Along with a good fighting belt, a high quality anchor, buoys and stand up harness, here are just some of the the basic tools below you will need to successfully swordfish in the Cayman Islands:
1. Reels
Penn International Reels and Shimano Tiagra Reels are the best top quality reels you can get. Once again we recommend spending the extra money on these top quality reels meant to catch big game like Swordfish. If you don’t have the extra money to buy a brand new reel, check out auction sites like Ebay where you can purchase a good quality, used version. Just make sure that you check the drag before purchasing!
2. Rods
Having a strong high-quality rod is extremely important for swordfish fishing, let alone night swordfish fishing. As you know, swordfish are extremely strong and it is very easy for this great beast to break a cheap rod in half. We recommend Penn stand up combos in the 60-90 lb range. Spend some time shopping around and talking to experienced fisherman along the way.
3. Braided Line
As we have mentioned time and time again, swordfish are very STRONG. This means you will need a very durable and high-quality braided line. You will want to make sure there is no stretch in the line which results in more pressure and a stronger hook set. Choosing a white colored line also serves a purpose as you will be able to see it better in the lights.
4. Leader
From all of the professional swordfish fishing fishermen I have spoken to over the years, they have all agreed that using a wind-on leader is essential in successful swordfish fishing. A wind on leader will allow you to fight the fish directly onto the boat. Your leader along as your high quality gear is detrimental to a successful catch. You should be using at least 200# strength and use LP leader material.
5. Weights
You will need some good quality reasonably heavy weights to catch a swordfish. Pick up a variety including 24 oz, 32 oz and 4 lb leads. You must be able to keep your bait at the depth you need it to be at and so adequate wait is critical.
